How I Traveled to 9 Countries (While Working Full-Time)

Submitted by Wanderlust Andi

You have a wanderlust spirit but are tied to a job - and a desk - Monday-Friday, almost the whole year. On top of that, if you are like most people, you are using less and less of your vacation time. And, if you do take off to try to enjoy some time, you feel guilty. But, for many of us, the work we are doing is on a laptop which, by definition, can go anywhere. So, if you want to satisfy your wanderlust, the answer could be finding a job where you can work where your wanderlust spirit takes you, like Samantha O'Brochta:

  • She started working with a social media company that allowed her to occasionally work remotely. So, she took advantage of the policy and visited Washington state as well as Asia and Europe, all while working remotely.
  • She then found a job at a travel company that allowed her to work remotely full time.
  • And, with her life of working remotely, she was able to travel, work - and play - in 25 cities in 9 different countries.
  • She did find that many of the challenges that go with being a digital nomad, such as working in different time zones than your company and clients, unreliable WiFI, and keeping up with her work while planning and doing travel, lead her to conclude that maybe she was better suited as a part-time digital nomad.
  • However, she loved being able to see the world, and will not be giving up her travels.

And, her advice: "if you have a skill set that can be done entirely online, then start searching for location-independent gigs, and then working from a beach in Bali can start to become more of a reality than you ever realized."
