What is a Digital Nomad? The Movement that’s Reshaping the Working World

Submitted by Wanderlust Andi

Do you have a skill that can be done most anywhere? Do you want to travel, but can't afford it? You might be one of the growing many that join the group called "digital nomads".A digital nomad is someone who is location independent, so their "home" and job can be anywhere. So, for example, those that are web developers, writers, photographers, virtual personal assistants, online teachers, or house sitters could go on the road while they work, and not be strapped in one location.

Highlights:

  • A benefit of this lifestyle is that you get to travel where you want BEFORE you retire (if you ever plan on retiring).
  • Another benefit is that if you go to countries with a cheaper lifestyle, you could even save money vs. housing costs in the US
  • And yet another benefit is that there is no commuting!
  • The downside is fighting strange internet connections (although in the US, the mobile phone unlimited data plans are lessening this drawback)
  • Communicating with those you work for can be more tricky - you will need to understand tools like online project management and virtual conference applications.
  • You do need a sense of independence and the ability to work - and get motivated -  alone.

"That being said, the nomad community is a very friendly one that sticks together to help combat the list of cons. With a number of groups and meetups across the world, you can connect with other digital nomads to help each other out, and enjoy traveling the world together as you earn a living."
