Landscape photography really boils down to 2 things: having the right gear and knowing how to use it. You need a camera, obviously, but a tripod is also essential as well.
It can also help if you have access to a couple of filters including a polarizer and neutral density filters. Beyond that it all comes down to lighting and composition.
Use the rule of thirds to ensure you have your subject in the right portion of the frame. Leading lines can also help make a great photograph. Framing your photo with natural elements such as tree branches or a window frame can be quite powerful.
Injecting color into a shot is a very easy way to make a boring landscape into something very exciting. Choosing the best lighting is easy as well. Just pick the golden hours, just before sunset, and just after sunrise when the sun's natural light is warm.
