Escanaba, Michigan: Swedish Pantry
Submitted by Wanderlust AndiWhen you enter the Swedish Pantry, you feel like you are back in Minneapolis with its variety of Swedish restaurants and shops. The entry is full of gift items to buy, while the restaurant is a room full of tables with white tablecloths, a ceiling decorated with red and green garland, and walls packed with clocks that can be purchased.
The menu is full of Swedish and comfort foods, such as Swedish pancakes, potato sausage with lingonberries, meat balls and meat loaf, potato pancakes, potato dumplings, roast pork and turkey, fish, and sandwiches. If you are into satisfying food, this is your place.
I had the Swedish pancakes and potato sausage dish. I was raised on Swedish pancakes, and my family made potato sausage. I must say, that the pancakes and sausage came very close to what I was raised with - and that is saying a lot. Swedish pancakes are similar to crepes - but richer. If you have never had them, you definitely need to come and try them - you are in for a real treat!
Be sure to leave some room for dessert, though. I understand that their cardamom bread pudding is to die for. And their other homemade goodies, such as sour cream walnut pie and mile high lemon meringue pie look just as good.
Enjoy this piece of Swedish heritage - you will be glad you did!
