As a pedestrian, do you have the right-of-way?

Submitted by Wanderlust Andi

When you are traveling and in an unfamiliar town, it is vital to make smart decisions when crossing the street. Overall, pedestrians do have the right-of-way. However, it is important to follow key guidelines when crossing the street:

  • If you are in the crosswalk, you have the right-of-way.
  • Do not assume that the driver is going to see you, though, even if you have the right-of-way. So, don't just step out into the street without looking and knowing you are not in danger.
  • If you are not using a crosswalk, you might have the right-of-way. However, you should still use extreme caution.

So - get out and enjoy the town. Just be sure to do as we were told as children: look both ways before crossing the street.
