Wow! Virgin Hotels says that WiFi is a right - not a revenue stream

Submitted by Anonymous

At Virgin Hotel Chicago, wireless internet is available to hotel occupants free of charge. Many hotels charge customers for the right to use and access the wireless internet at a hotel. For example, Marriott, a 4-star hotel, can charge over $10/day per device. That means that, if you carry the usual 3 WiFi devices, you can easily be charged over $30/day for WiFi.

But this is not the case at the first ever Virgin Hotel to open. Doug Carillo, vice president of sales and marketing for Virgin Hotels, described wireless internet access at the hotel as a “right” for customers. In fact, Virgin's policy is:

"Super speedy WiFi is free, with no bandwidth restrictions - just the way it should be. WiFi is a right - not a revenue stream. So feel free to stream whatever you like."

Wow - after all of the incredibly slow, sporadic, and expensive WiFi we have experienced, it is nice to actually hear that we - and our WiFi-enabled devices - are actually WANTED at a hotel.

One of the most important factors to consider is the proximity of the hotel to the client's office and airport (if you are flying in). You don’t want to be spending the majority of your trip in the car or a taxi.

When you stay in a 2-star hotel, you get free WI-FI. However, the further up the "stars" you go, the higher chance that you will have to pay $30/day (and more) for WI-FI!

Marriott seems intent on being in the news for the steps they are taking against customer satisfaction. First, they were in the news for jamming their guest's WiFi. Then, they were in the news for not charging their $13 per day PER DEVICE for WiFi access - only if you are a rewards member AND if you book directly through Marriott.
