Wow! Virgin Hotels says that WiFi is a right - not a revenue stream
Submitted by AnonymousAt Virgin Hotel Chicago, wireless internet is available to hotel occupants free of charge. Many hotels charge customers for the right to use and access the wireless internet at a hotel. For example, Marriott, a 4-star hotel, can charge over $10/day per device. That means that, if you carry the usual 3 WiFi devices, you can easily be charged over $30/day for WiFi.
But this is not the case at the first ever Virgin Hotel to open. Doug Carillo, vice president of sales and marketing for Virgin Hotels, described wireless internet access at the hotel as a “right” for customers. In fact, Virgin's policy is:
"Super speedy WiFi is free, with no bandwidth restrictions - just the way it should be. WiFi is a right - not a revenue stream. So feel free to stream whatever you like."
Wow - after all of the incredibly slow, sporadic, and expensive WiFi we have experienced, it is nice to actually hear that we - and our WiFi-enabled devices - are actually WANTED at a hotel.

The reason why they did this, as the FCC claims, was to force guests in the hotel (mainly those attending conventions) to purchase the broadband internet services from Marriott International.
