Would you stay at a KOA?

Submitted by Wanderlust Andi

Jim Rogers, the chairman and chief executive of Kampgrounds of America (KOA), is trying to make even hesitant campers comfortable in the backcountry. KOA might surprise you, for there are options ranging from pancake breakfasts and horse back riding to wine tastings and zip lines.

Reasonable costs for camping - and cabins

KOA has accommodations for camping and RV's. For those who don't want to camp and don't have an RV, though, they also have basic - and deluxe - cabins.  A quick search for KOA accommodations near Richmond, VA this week (April 7, 2015) shows that you can get:

  • a basic cabin with no kitchen nor bath/shower for $50/night - with a "lovely view of the lake" (how many $50 hotels have a view?). You will need to bring your own linens.
  • a deluxe cabin that sleeps 4 with a fridge and bath (and linens) for $90/night
  • a deluxe cabin that sleeps 6 with a kitchen (with linens, dishes and pans), a bath, and an outdoor grill for $123/night
  • a tent location with water and electricity for $32/night
  • RV camping for $40-50/night

Plus, good amenities

At the Richmond location, there is WiFi, free train rides for the kids, a fishing pond, pool, mini-golf, and even hay rides. And, you will be tucked in the woods - not between 2 (or more) interstate highways.

And - you might even get paid!

There is another intriguing option: a "Work Kamper" program, where you can earn pay for short time commitments as you stay. Obviously, you would need to know more details - but it does sound like a great way to see the country - and make money.

Tips for choosing a hotel for business

Proximity to business or hotel

There are a few crucial things to keep in mind when selecting a hotel for your business travels. No, it is not the proximity to a thriving downtown with lots of fun bars. One of the most important factors to consider is the proximity of the hotel to the client's office and airport (if you are flying in). You don’t want to be spending the majority of your trip in the car or a taxi.
