How Uber could make your trip safer

The Uber app in India offers the ability for passengers to press a 'Panic' button if they feel unsafe. However this button is noticeably absent from the US version of the app.
With the recent massacre in Michigan committed by an Uber driver on the clock, could Uber not only screen their drivers better but include the button already implemented in India? Background checks performed by Uber may not stop all drivers intending to do harm to passengers from being hired, but the addition of the button gives an added line of defense to passengers. With the press of a button, police are alerted by an SOS message that transmits the location of the vehicle giving passengers a chance of survival in case of emergency.
I must admit that I have never tried to use Uber - mainly out of fear of traveling alone with a stranger. A panic button just might reduce my fears enough to at least try Uber!
