Successful location independent business examples
Samantha O'Brochta: her experience with salaried location independent jobs
Samantha O'Brochta is an example of someone who works remotely for a company while traveling the world. As a social media expert, she was able to find jobs where she could combine her love of travel with her work.
- She started her digital nomad venture by working as a social media expert with a company that allowed employees to take off occasionally. So, taking full advantage of this benefit, she took off and visited various countries while working.
- When that company stopped offering the remote-job benefit, she focused on searching for location independent jobs where she could work remotely. After an intense job search, she found a full-time job with a travel company. Her work with the travel company allowed her to visit 25 cities in nine different countries, all while working - and playing.
- She did find some issues, such as lack of reliable WiFi and dealing with time zone differences. But she feels it was worth it.
Samantha loves her traveling lifestyle and will tell you that if you want to travel and if you can do your work online, you can have both. As she says: "We live in a new world where you can mold your life into anything you wish it to be, and if that's to fulfill bucket list items while also having a career, it's possible."
Johnny FD: you can have a highly successful location independent business while traveling
If you want to start your own remote business for your digital nomad life, look to Johnny FD for inspiration. He is making $15-20,000 per month through his own money-making websites.
- He went from having $1000 in the bank to having more than one million in the bank. He was able to get this success through multiple ventures such as affiliate marketing, drop-shipping e-commerce, and publishing websites - all while sharing his travel adventures on his travel website.
- He started with a Kindle publishing site, then moved on to courses, podcasts, and drop-shipping e-commerce sites. Most of his sites are not affiliate marketing sites.
- Because they are all online sites, he can work on these sites wherever he is, throughout the world.
- When he is building a new site, he will work 40-50 hours per week. But once the site is running, his work week will drop to 4-5 hours per week, which is the beauty of having a well-running business site.
What does Johnny FD like about his lifestyle? It "allows me the free time and freedom to be able to openly share and help inspire others to do the same."
Rosie Yakob started her on-the-road consulting business - accidentally
Rosie Yakob and her husband wanted to get away from the stress and busyness of the work-a-day world. In doing so, they "accidentally" started a digital nomad consulting business.
- She woke up one day and found that her beloved New York City job as a branding expert had turned into a job where you were busy all the time.
- So, she and her husband sold everything they had and took off traveling around the world.
- During their travels, though, some agencies they knew called them and asked them to help with some projects. So they started working with these clients - while enjoying their traveling life.
- This led them to create their on-the-road consulting business.
They have found tremendous satisfaction with their digital nomad lifestyle. Not only can they enjoy their travels, they found that having their own business allows them to enjoy their work. For, they can now be very selective about the clients they work with and the projects they work on. Plus, the life of busyness is gone: they make it a "point to work 20 hours a week or less. We’re not busy; we’re just having fun."
The first steps towards finding a digital nomad job
As the above stories show, there are no best location independent jobs:
- As Samantha O'Brochta found, you can start your digital nomad job search by working for a company that offers remote work as a benefit and travel and work on a part-time basis. Or, you can search location independent jobs that offer the potential of working remotely full-time.
- As Johnny FD demonstrates, you can start now by creating your own online business. Start by jotting down those products and services in your life that you like. This can be the start towards finding that niche that will bring you a great online business.
- And. as Rosie Yakob showed, if you already have a skill, such as website design and marketing, advertising, photography, or writing, you can start your consulting business now. In fact, even if you just volunteer to be a photographer at your friend’s wedding, or do some writing for a volunteer organization, it is a start. Any experience (and good reviews) that you can create will be a big help towards selling your skills later - as well as getting good referral business.
And, the “when” also has different answers, as you can either:
- start your remote work now and take it on the road later, or
- get on the road (where expenses could be cheaper than what you are paying now), and then start your work.
Whatever direction you want to go, the best time to start is: now.
