How to use your mobile devices internationally - without spending a fortune
Submitted by Wanderlust AndiAre you going abroad - even to Canada or Mexico? Being able to use your mobile devices during this travel is very important - both for keeping in touch with those at home and for using your valuable apps (like Google maps).
Check out these options for ensuring you get service to your mobile devices during your travel:
- You can buy a SIM card when you reach your destination. Note that your phone must be unlocked for this. You will most likely be able to have your carrier unlock your phone, provided you are in good standing with your carrier and the carrier's terms and conditions have been met. Give your carrier a call to determine how you can unlock your phone. Then, research the best carriers for the country you are going to to you so you are prepared to buy the SIM card when you arrive.
- While you are calling your carrier - ask them about the types of plans they have for international travel. More often than not, these plans are more expensive than getting a local Sim card, but it is worth a call.
And, no matter what plan you go with, minimize your costs by connecting to free Wi-Fi for your data usage and calls. You can use applications like Skype and Iphone's Facetime for Wi-Fi calls and, of course, free Wi-Fi will cost you less than any data plan.
So - enjoy your trip - while being able to keep your friends and family up-to-date with your travel stories - and photos!
